Will Scruggs joins new Millennium...finally :|: [Posted by Willis] |
After holding out for as long as possible I finally gave in to peer pressure.....and signed up for FACEBOOK. I have a regular site and a FAN site, and now that I'm on I need friends and fans!!! If you're a Facebook person, please look me up. You can find my personal page through searching for my email address: will@willscruggs.com. You can find my fan page by searching for Will Scruggs.......or searching Will Scruggs under pages. I'm still a little foggy on how to distinguish between the two, but I will use both pages to keep you informed of my musical activities (and, on the personal site, some non-musical stuff as well). And on the FAN site I will upload new songs and videos from time-to-time (because the new millennium marketers tell me to). I also signed up for TWITTER. You can follow me there at www.twitter.com/willscruggs |

Eddie's Show Added - Friday Sept 4th!!! :|: [Posted by Willis] |
We just added a last-minute, special show at Eddie's Attic on Friday September 4th. Start your Labor Day weekend off right with CC Booker III - a Soul Jazz tribute to Ray Charles, King Curtis, and Booker T. Michael J West of the Washington City paper writes: “Playing to a packed house at Twins Jazz at Saturday night’s 9:00 set, CC Booker III, feat. Will Scruggs, delivered an earthshaking mix of soul, funk, and hard-bop jazz. Every solo, every tune, and occasionally even a few lonely riffs generated screams and mighty ovations. Twins has a reputation for filling seats with the avant-garde, but even the edgiest listeners need some good old funky fun now and then. CC Booker only plays DC about once a year, but they never fail to generate that fun.” $15 at the door, $12 in advance at www.eddiesattic.com, 1/2 price for musicians at the door. This show will feature David Ellington, organ, Marlon Patton, drums, and Dan Baraazu, guitar. Doors at 7 PM, sets at 8 and 10 PM. |

Will Scruggs: A Life of Jazz
Born in Atlanta, Will Scruggs began playing sax at the age of 8 before going on to be voted Most Outstanding Member of the Enloe High School Jazz Band in Raleigh, North Carolina, and selected as the First Chair Baritone Sax in the 1998 Honor Band of America.
At Emory University, Will was named the top college jazz musician of 2001 in Alabama and Georgia by the Alabama Jazz and Blues Federation. While attending Emory he studied saxophone with Nathanael Fareed Mahluli and was mentored by Gary Motley and Rev. Dr. Dwight Andrews. After becoming the first student ever to graduate from Emory with Highest Honors in Jazz Performance, "Mr. Scruggs" joined Teach for America to teach first grade in Southeast Atlanta.
Will has recorded two full-length albums of original music with Cadillac Jones, an original jazz/funk band out of Atlanta. Their second record, Junk in the Trunk, was released in 2003 by Harmonized Records, a subsidiary of Leeway's Homegrown Music Network. During his time with Cadillac Jones, Will had the opportunity to sit in with both the Dirty Dozen and Rebirth Brass Bands, open shows for Charlie Hunter and Blood, Sweat, and Tears, and perform at the Knitting Factory in New York, NY. During this time he also made regular guest appearances with Perpetual Groove throughout the Southeast and as far as California, where he shared the stage with Skerik, Jessica Lurie, and Umphrey's McGee's Jake Cinninger at the 2003 High Sierra Music Festival.
In 2004 Will left Cadillac Jones to lead his own band, the Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship, releasing a self-titled CD in early 2005. The independent album received airplay on over 50 radio stations nationwide, quickly turning a profit. After touring the East Coast and bringing messages of peace, justice, and unity to audiences from Florida to Washington, DC, the Jazz Fellowship performed at the 2006 Atlanta Jazz Festival as winners of the 2005 Future of Jazz Competition. The second original Jazz Fellowship album, BlueBari Jam, is set to be released by the end of 2006.

In addition to his success as a bandleader, Will Scruggs is quickly making a name for himself as one of the top-call saxophonists in the Southeast. In 2002 he was featured as a special guest soloist with the Dave Brubeck Quartet and the Emory Symphony Orchestra. Since 2003 he has appeared on over 20 albums, including records produced by Dallas Austin, Noel Alphonso, and Oliver Wood. As a member of the Funderhorns, Will can be heard on Leavin, the newest record from Eight-time Grammy Award winner Natalie Cole. He also performed with Ms. Cole at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta and the Apollo Theater in New York City. Scruggs has appeared multiple times on Good Day Atlanta and the Cartoon Network as a member of the Kingsized Orchestra, traveled to Detroit with the roots-reggae band Revelation, and completed an extensive Southeast College Tour with singer/songwriter and Red Drum Records artist Chris Cauley. He also performs regularly with vocalist Audrey Shakir.
Will Scruggs currently lives in Atlanta, GA. In December 2006 he completd a Masters of Music in Jazz Studies at Georgia State University. When he is not traveling or recording, he serves as music manger, booking agent, and leader of the house band at Rays Killer Creek in Alpharetta, GA. He also volunteers regularly as a tutor and mentor with his former students from Teach for America and tours in a 1990 Diesel Ford van that runs on 100% waste vegetable oil. |
Will Scruggs plays Conn/Selmer Saxophones exclusively.
